SE PA and DC Day 8: York, again

(30 miles)

I recognized long ago that the comfortable American middle-class life is structurally similar to the game of baseball: there are islands of drama and excitement, disappointment and loss, and surprise and challenge, all encountered somewhat randomly in a large sea of uninspiring sameness. Put another way: some days are noteworthy; most days are not.

A bike tour definitely skews life toward excitement and surprise, but even on a bike tour there are days of uninspiring sameness. The recent days of experiencing Gettysburg, the Amish in Lancaster, and a visit with my long-lost “twin” brother John in Coatesville are noteworthy and memorable. The ride today, from Lancaster back to York, had the feel of uninspiring sameness.

Just to be clear: a warm, sunny day spent riding a bike without any responsibility other than getting from point A to B safely is a really good day. All I’m saying is, didn’t I just ride from York to Lancaster on this same route a few days ago?

My bike in the morning sun, parked outside of the Target in Lancaster. I bought a set of UBL noise cancelling ear buds for the trip to York

Pennsylvania Bike Route S runs though Lancaster west to York. The entire S route runs from just north of Philadelphia west to the West Virginia state line.

(Editor’s comment: the graphic on the sign shows the situation about 500 milliseconds before the cyclist goes airborne.)

The Google image on the left shows a stony, white mulch surrounding a sidewalk tree on George Street in York. The photo on the right shows this mulch is actually clam shells.

I ate again at the Wing Stop that I first visited when I was in York last Wednesday. I think I will always associate Wing Stop with this video, which I also posted last Wednesday

When I dropped the Philadelphia extension off the trip route last Thursday, I booked Monday night at the Red Roof Inn Downtown York, as it was the closest motel to the start of Tuesday’s ride. I didn’t look at any reviews before I booked a room, although the $60 price for a downtown hotel should have been an indication of what I was getting.

(Editor’s comment: There were 17 on-line reviews for this motel, and 14 of them were 1 star. Some examples are below.)
